The Canada eTA Policy determines which travellers need an electronic travel authorisation when flying to or transiting through Canada. Generally, citizens of countries whose nationals are visa-exempt for air travel need an eTA rather than a visitor visa. Travellers arriving by land or sea from an eTA-required country generally do not need an eTA, although they still need a valid passport and must meet Canada’s entry requirements. Some travellers are exempt from the eTA requirement, including Canadian citizens and certain other categories. The rules can depend on nationality, travel document and method of travel, so checking your individual situation before booking a trip is important. Having an eTA also does not automatically guarantee admission to Canada.
